The dance ensemble "Dancis" of the University of Latvia was founded in 1946. The core of the ensemble consists of students and graduates of the University of Latvia, as well as dancers from all over Latvia. In total, there are around 100 dancers in two dance groups - the general group and the middle generation group with participants aged from 16 to 50 years. The majority of "Dancis" dancers have been dancing since early childhood, therefore dance has become an integral part of their lives. Since 1987 the leader of the ensemble is Rolands Jurashevskis. Ballet masters of the ensemble are Sandra Vitola and Aigars Ondzulis. Concertmaster – Maris Sers.
"Dancis" cultivates Latvian folk dance in its broadest spectrum - from the golden foundation of Latvian stage dance to creative dances created by contemporary choreographers. Many of the dances created in "Dance" have become an integral part of the repertoires of other ensembles. "Dancis" has performed in almost all European countries and continues to perform regularly both in Europe and further. "Dancis" also participates in dance festivals, is a laureate of worldwide youth and student festivals, as well as international competitions.
The folk dance ensemble "Dancis" stands out with its annual calendars with an original design that almost every Latvian knows of.
