The mixed choir Aura of the University of Latvia is composed of singers who grew up in various regions of Latvia but moved to Riga for their studies, where they now unite in song. Thanks to the singers’ love for music, the enthusiasm of artistic direction and condoctorship Edgars Vītols, Inga Lisovska, Lauma Eglīte and Emīls Rusovs, Aura has experienced many spectacular concerts, achieved high results in competitions, and created unforgettable memories over its 20 years of existence.
The choir has achieved outstanding results not only in competitions in Latvia—placing among the top 10 amateur choirs in Latvia in the "Dziesmu Kari" competition of the XXVI Latvian Song and XVI Dance Festival in 2018 and winning the 3rd place diploma in the "Koru Kari" competition of the XXVII Latvian Song and XVII Dance Festival in 2023—but also on the European and global stage, bringing home awards from Germany, Austria, Malta, the Czech Republic, and Spain. Beyond competitions, the choir has performed at significant events in various European countries and even in Canada, where in 2024, they were invited as a guests to give solo concerts at the XVI Latvian Song and Dance Festival in Toronto.
Aura has always crafted musically intelligent and diverse concert programs, incorporating pieces from sacred music, classical choral repertoire, Latvian folk song motifs, masterpieces by both emerging and well-known Latvian composers, and works by international composers. The choir often surprises its audience not only with its varied repertoire, but also with its ability to move synchronously, depict natural phenomena such as rainfall and thunder, and present a visually striking appearance—whether in formal concert attire or traditional Latvian folk costumes.
