The Wind Orchestra of the University of Latvia (LUPO) was established in 2008, and it consists of more than 50 musicians from various Latvian universities and music schools. The conductor and founder of the orchestra is Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music assoc. Professor Janis Purins.
The Wind Orchestra of the University of Latvia regularly participates in various festivals and competitions. They also oftenly stage solo concert programs in which Latvian and foreign music programs are played, including new works and pieces written specially for the orchestra. From the very beginning, the Wind Orchestra has been a member of the annual closing concert of "Bravo-bravissimo" - Latvian music schools' wind and percussion bands competition, preparing and playing the laureates' programs together with the winners of the competition. LUPO is also a participant and winner of many competitions in Latvia and abroad - in Lithuania, Estonia, Belarus, Norway, Germany, the Czech Republic, etc. The collective has collaborated with guest conductors from Latvia, Great Britain, Norway and even the USA.
The Wind Orchestra of the University of Latvia has released two CDs, where Rolf Rudin's Requiem, op.70, released in 2010, has been recognized by many music specialists worldwide for its recording and artistic quality.
