The women's choir "BALTA" of the University of Latvia was founded in 1999 by its artistic director and conductor Professor Mara Marnauza. The choir has demonstrated a high artistic level and achieved significant success in choir competitions both in Latvia and abroad. At the moment choir "BALTA" ranks 7th in the INTERKULTUR world choir rankings in the women's choirs category.

Since its first year the choir has proven its high artistic quality by participating in all Baltic Students' Song and Dance festival "Gaudeamus" (held in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia) and the Nationwide Latvian Song and Dance Festival. The choir has also participated in master classes led by prominent conductors such as Bob Chilcott, Alexander Vacek, Christoph Schönherr, and Ragnar Rasmussen. Additionally, "BALTA" has performed in Germany, Norway, Hungary, Austria, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Poland, Spain, Slovakia, Italy, and China.

Choir BALTA can be proud of several CD and DVD recordings, the latest of which is "Touch of Light," released in 2024, featuring nine songs by the Latvian composer Andris Sejans as part of the Nature Concert Hall series.
